I used to RDP to the desktop in the office when I was working at home, through a VPN (standard Microsoft VPN client). I'm running Windows 8 Pro with Hyper-V on the laptop, with a number of VMs which I use intermittently. Those VMs need to be able to access the office network.
The machine should then start normally. Do note that if you are using the Windows Server 2012 server of Hyper-V, Generation 1 VMs must be used since Generation 2 VMs do not support Linux machines at this time.
